We are the local branch of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Chester and the surrounding area. We believe in, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons and the threat to humanity they pose. We are part of National CND and also of the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), who were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. We meet on the third Thursday of every odd month (January, March, May, July, September, and November) at 7.30pm in the Quaker Meeting House in Chester- all welcome.
We believe that the cost of the UK’s nuclear weapons- at least £100bn to replace the current system, called Trident- could be better spent on keeping the people of Britain safe through spending on health and education. At a time when our hospitals and schools are straining under the pressure of austerity, spending £1,540 per person on horrific weapons which cannot protect us from the threats we face from terrorism, chemical weapon attacks like that by Russia on Salisbury, climate change or cyber warfare is not defensible.
The entire resources of the NHS would be unable to deal with the effects of just one nuclear warhead detonated on just one city. Any use of Britain’s weapons would result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in seconds, with long term effects from radiation sickness, birth defects and cancer. We believe that to use nuclear weapons first, and cause this, would go against every ounce of humanity. To use them second, if another country had already wreaked that on us, would be pointless- if that had happened to us, why would we want to subject other innocent people to that as well?
Would you ever press the button? Why not work it out for yourself with the by going through these questions?
